Our history
The government's involvement in Sports in Nigeria dates back to 1962 when the National Sports Council was established. Later, the National Sports Commission was created and upgraded to Ministerial status in 1975. The Commission was dissolved in 1995 and reinstated in 2007. In 2016, it was merged with the Federal Ministry of Youth Development to become the Federal Ministry of Youth and Sports.
To realign Sports Administration with contemporary managerial and organizational best practices, the Federal Ministry of Sports Development was created in 2023 with five (5) professional and seven (7) Common Services Departments. The new administrative architecture is to enhance human resource capacity and productivity with a clear-cut definition of duties and performance measurement parameters for efficient and effective service delivery.
The Oscillation of the administration of Sports between the Federal Ministry of Sports and the National Sports Commission was a major factor that has militated against the desired growth and development of Sports in Nigeria.
