1st African School Games: Team Nigeria Opens Medal Account with Two Silver Finishes, Athletics Sets Off on Friday

Team Nigeria has officially opened its medal account at the ongoing African School Games in Annaba, Algeria, securing two silver medals in badminton and women’s 3x3 basketball.

In a thrilling badminton mixed event final held on Tuesday, Team Nigerian put up a valiant fight but narrowly lost to host nation Algeria in a tightly contested showdown. The match drew cheers from the crowd, as the Nigerian team fought galantly all through.

In another impressive outing, Nigeria’s girls’ 3x3 basketball team clinched silver after an intense final clash against Rwanda at the Chappi Beach basketball court.

The game ended 11–12 in favor of Rwanda, despite a spirited late surge by the Nigerian side.

Earlier in the day, the girls had edged out Benin Republic in the semifinals to book their spot in the final. The medals were presented to the team by the President of the Nigerian Olympic Committee (NOC), Engr. Habu Gumel, who commended the athletes for their resilience and team spirit.

With these podium finishes, Team Nigeria has signaled its intent to compete strongly across all events. The spotlight now shifts to the track as athletics begins on Friday, August 1st.

Leading the charge on the track is the sensational Miracle Ezechukwu, reigning African U18 champion in the 100m and 200m events. Ezechukwu, alongside a promising lineup of athletes, are expected to be major medal contenders as Team Nigeria continues its quest for sporting excellence.

The National Sports Commission has applauded the performances of the young athletes and reiterated its commitment to nurturing grassroots talent through international exposure and competitive opportunities.
